My first large-scale work (1977-78), which, unsurprisingly, took a bit of revisiting to get right. It is also the first work that speaks in my voice, which has, from time to time down the years, deepened, roughened, sharpened, softened, but has remained much the same throughout.

This is not a symphonic concerto; its purpose is to explore first the expressive, and second the technical, range of the solo instrument. Seventeen minutes are plenty for that purpose, and the best is saved for last: the concluding sonata-rondo could almost stand by itself.
